General Dentistry

With the "ALF: Stealth Braces" we are concerned with removing the cranial restrictions, encouraging the tongue to learn the appropriate "spot" for proper swallowing, encourage nasal breathing, creating the proper form of the palate to accommodate the permanent teeth, and placement of the mandible for temporo-mandibular joint health. As these things happen, we not only see changes in tongue posture, but in body posture, forward head posture, and changes in sleep habits.

In the placement of dental restorations, we are equally concerned that the old filling material is removed and disposed of properly (Safe Amalgam Removal Protocol and an Amalgam Separator). We can test the most sensitive patients to make sure that the dental materials used are suitable for their body. (Clifford Materials Reactivity Testing). Although, most of the materials we incorporate are suitable for even the most chemically sensitive patient.
  • Cleanings and Exams
"The Road to a Healthy Happy Smile"

Healthy teeth means happy teethA cleaning, or dental prophylaxis, is a thorough scraping of your teeth done by a dental professional. Special instruments that are uniquely sharpened and curved to fit in and around the teeth are used to safely remove build up on the teeth. Build up on the teeth, or plaque, is a result of bacteria and food debris that accumulate on the surfaces of the teeth. Our mouths are full of millions of bacteria, with a healthy diet and good oral hygiene we are able to minimize the build up of bacteria and keep the bad bacteria from over growing on the teeth.

A dental exam is when the dentist checks all of the teeth and mouth for any signs of unhealthy gums, abnormal growths of the tissue, active infections, and cavities. The dentist uses specialized instruments to check the teeth for cavities or weakened areas of the tooth due to bacterial breakdown. They look and feel for abnormal growths or discolorations of the gums, tongue and oral mucosa in an oral cancer screening.

Why is a cleaning recommended every 6 months?

Molar with plaque after brushing from biofilm being cleaned with dental instrumentProfessional cleaning of your teeth are recommended for healthy mouths every 6 months because the bacteria in the mouths, oral flora, grow exponentially and cover all surfaces of the mouth. Regular brushing, flossing and mouth rinses control the growth of the bacteria and minimize the growth of bad bacteria. However, even the best oral home-care can not get in between or around the teeth like the professional dental cleaning instruments can. After approximately 6 months with regular home care, the bacterial colonies have covered all surfaces of the tooth and brushing only removes superficial layers. It is for that reason that cleanings are recommended every 6 months for healthy mouths.

  • Dental Implants

implant with abutment and crownOur office has been placing implants since 1987. Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your other teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile.

What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a "root" implant, usually made of titanium to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth. Virtually all dental implants are root form endosseous implants, they look like an actual tooth root and are placed within the bone. After several months of healing, the bone of the jaw typically accepts and integrates with the titanium post.

Dental implants are used to support a number of dental prosthesis including crowns, bridges, and dentures.

ICAT 3D Conebeam CT has allowed for 3D imaging of the bones and the teeth. This allows for the dentist to see in all dimensions the amount of bone, the quality of the bone, the available space, and path of placement for the implant. Prior to all implant surgeries a 3D scan is done to maximize the effectiveness of placement.

  • Digital Xrays
"Minimizing radiation exposure and pollution"

Our office is proud to be equipped with the latest in digital xray technology. Dexis platinum digital xray sensors were installed in early 2011.

Digital xrays allow for a decrease of up to 75% in radiation exposure on each digital xray compared to traditional film xrays. Other benefits include:
  • instantaneous loading of the image on to the computer for immediate analysis and diagnosis
  •  decrease in environmental waste by elimination of film chemical processing solutions
  • shorter appointments

Why you need to have xrays at check ups:

Many diseases of the teeth and surrounding structures cannot be viewed without x-rays, they can help reveal:
  • early detection of small areas of decay
  • infections in the bone
  • periodontal (gum ) disease– which has been linked to heart disease, premature labor, diabetes
  • abscesses and cysts
  • developmental abnormalities
  • some types of tumors

How much radiation am I really getting with digital  dental x rays?

relative rad doses-1

The Washington State Department states that the maximum safe occupational whole body exposure is 5000 mRem  (this means you would need 15,000 digital x rays to reach this limit).

A single digital x ray- emits:                                  0.30mRem
Four digital bitewings (checkup x  rays):                1.2mRem
Digital full mouth series:                                       6.0mrem
